Every month, you may notice extra fees and charges on your bank statement. Luckily, you can avoid many of these:
1) Ask before you swipe, especially with small businesses. You want to know three things: does the business charge an additional fee for plastic? Does the business offer a cash-only discount? Does the business block any of your money? If the answer is yes to any of these, put your cards away and pay cash.
2) Keep tabs on your account to avoid overdraft fees. In many cases, overdrafts happen simply because consumers are not paying attention to what is coming out of their accounts. Keep careful track of your withdrawals and checks to ensure this does not happen to you.
3) Get money at the bank, not at ATMs. ATM fees are not worth the convenience. Consider printing a list of your bank’s branches and ATMs in your area and get out a little extra cash when you do go to your bank so that you do not need to rely on ATMs.
4) Ask about extra fees. When you see fees on your bank statement that you do not understand, call the bank and ask about them. The bank may be able to help you avoid these charges in the future.
